June 1 - June 7: During the last month of school and continuing during summer vacation, Natalie Hernandez, Josh Byron, Nannie Skold and I created a classics books club, in which we read classics and then meet and discuss them. So far we have read:
The Catcher in the Rye - a book about a troubled teenage boy who struggles to find his place in his "phony" world and understand other people.
The Great Gatsby - a book about a rich, mysterious man named Gatsby who does everything he can to win back the love of his previous sweetheart, Daisy.
Anna Karenina - a book about the a woman in elite Russian society who commits adultery and must choose between two different lives and live with what she has done.
A Farewell To Arms - a Hemingway love story between a American man and a British woman in Italy in the time of World War I.
The Bell Jar - a book about a seemingly normal teenage girl who, after getting rejected for a writing internship, spirals swiftly downhill and ends up in a mental hospital.

June 8 - June 14
This week I've been watching a few movies, one of them called Bend it Like Beckham, which is appropriate, considering the Wolrd Cup going on this summer. It is about an Indian girl whose family is struggling to settle in in Englan. Jess discovers she has a talent for soccer, but when she joins a girl's team her parents are furious, because they are planning for her to go to college and then get married to a nice Indian boy. But Jess is determined to follow her heart and her dreams and will do anything it takes to play.
